Why does my boiler ...

Frequently as Questions:

Why is my boiler not firing up?

Common causes:

  • No power or gas supply = You check your gas meter and electric meter before contacting an engineer.

  • Low water pressure = You can top up your boiler water pressure. Ideally should be on 1.5 bar. See video clip to the right. If you cannot do this, then contact an engineer.

  • Faulty components (pump, fan, PCB, sensors) = this will require an engineer.

Why have I not got hot water?

  • Boiler fault or no power = check electric meter before contacting an engineer.

  • Faulty diverter valve (combi boiler) = engineer required.

  • Low system pressure = top up boiler pressure.

  • No gas supply = check gas meter before contacting an engineer.

What 3 things could cause a boiler to trip?

  • Electrical fault (short circuit, power surge) = engineer required.

  • Overheating (due to circulation issues or blocked heat exchanger) = engineer required.

  • Low water pressure or water leak = top up pressure before contacting an engineer.

What does red light on my boiler mean?

  • Warning or fault — boiler has detected an issue and may have shut down. Check fault code or manual. Try resetting the boiler before contacting an engineer.

Will my boiler explode?

  • Extremely unlikely. Modern boilers have multiple safety features to prevent dangerous pressure build-up or overheating. If you are worried about your boiler contact an engineer who can carry out safety checks and advise.

Will my boiler work without gas or electricity?

  • Without gas: No, it cannot heat water or radiators.

  • Without electricity: No, modern boilers require power for controls, pumps, and ignition.

My room thermostat says boiler is on but I have not got heating
Possible reasons:

  • Circulation pump fault = engineer required.

  • Air in system or radiator valves closed = check radiators before contacting an engineer.

  • Boiler not responding to thermostat signal = try reparing (paring up the thermostat and receiver) before contacting an engineer.

What does red light on my room thermostat mean?

  • Low battery, signal error, or fault. Refer to thermostat manual — red often means it’s not controlling the boiler correctly. If still having issues contact an engineer.
